We drove up to Idaho Springs on Sunday just to get away from the city and the heat.

We were delighted to see that they had blocked off Miner Street where most of the restaurants are located in order to expand dining onto the sidewalk and into the street. It eased our minds to be able to eat outdoors. Actually, we ordered to-go sandwiches from Two Brothers Deli and had a picnic in the park, but we could have eaten on the tables set outside. “We just started this on Thursday,” said a spokesman from the store. “It’s been working out great!”

For summer dining, this is a perfect model for small mountain towns that are able to divert traffic to alternate streets. I hope we see more of it.
