Luxurious C Lazy U Guest Ranch Honored With 2018 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence
By Lizzie Henss
The seeds of dude ranch history stretch back to the late 19th century and Granby’s award-winning C Lazy U Ranch is no stranger to the long-standing tradition of western hospitality.
While preparing to celebrate the locally and family-owned property’s 100-year anniversary, C Lazy U has brought home several awards and recognitions this year, including its debut in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best list and the 2018 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence – the ranch’s third-consecutive year winning this award, which celebrates restaurants across the country with strong programs that promote thoughtful, expansive wine lists.
C Lazy U’s wine list is curated by newly appointed Sommelier Elise Blann, who holds a Level II certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence is awarded to restaurants across the world that offer wine lists boasting a selection that is not only interesting and surprising but appealing to all palates. The wine lists – typically offering at least 90 different wines from various producers – also match the dinner menu in price and style, complementing the food effortlessly.
C Lazy U’s dining program is led by Executive Chef Dennis Kaniger and features longtime Colorado ranch favorites and delicious regional specialties, such as aged western beef, Rocky Mountain trout and rosemary rack of lamb. The kitchen works hand-in-hand with Blann to pair each evening’s dinner with unique and complementary wine selections.
When visiting C Lazy U, Blann recommends pairing the 2014 Dutton-Goldfield Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley with New York strip steak, which is served with sautéed mushrooms, onions and peppers. The wine is effortlessly smooth and immediately opens up, complementing the dish perfectly.
At C Lazy U Ranch, it is more than world-class wine and exquisite dining programs; it is about creating experiences that are rooted in the rich traditions of the American West, with core programming centered around horsemanship and family-friendly activities. In fact, C Lazy U has offered horseback riding to its guests since its inception in 1919. Today, the ranch offers limitless year-round adventures including a second-to-none children’s program, nightly entertainment, Orvis-endorsed fly fishing, mountain biking, hatchet throwing and more. www.clazyu.com
